Sciencepreneurship: Science, Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Economic Growth. (Emerald Points) 136 pp. 2023:3 (Emerald, UK) <697-92>
ISBN 978-1-83753-365-7 hard ¥11,682.- (税込) US$ 60.00
In Sciencepreneurship, author Piero Formica explores the symbiotic relationship between science, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic growth. He argues that like artists, writers and educators, scientists and entrepreneurs foster social progress and provide opportunities to advance sustainable and environmentally friendly economic development. Innovative and future thinking entrepreneurs play a special role in the advancement of science and technology. They help guide scientific discoveries into our daily lives and reveal new opportunities for social innovation as they exploit the discoveries that scientists make of the natural world. Sciencepreneurship argues that forward-thinking scientific entrepreneurs are well placed to take advantage of recent breakthroughs ranging from genetic sequencing to smartphone applications-innovations that have entered our lives at breakneck speed. Taking a transdisciplinary approach, which is one that integrates the natural, social and health sciences in a humanities context, Formica teaches readers, from academic researchers to engaged entrepreneurs, how to valorise science and entrepreneurship by designing a context of close, long-term interaction between the two.

ISBN 978-1-80382-556-4 hard ¥32,125.- (税込) US$ 165.00
The Covid 19 pandemic has created chaos in the business world and forced leaders to rethink their operational status quo. Balancing the physical and virtual spaces of the global digital economy wherein economic, commercial, and professional transactions are enabled by information and communication technologies has called for additional support from data-driven technologies like smart analytics and artificial intelligence. Opportunities created within digital economies to leverage technologies to execute tasks better, faster, and often differently have found the desired prominence in the recent past. Though the benefits outweigh the risks, the challenges in digitalised economies are as sophisticated as the solutions they offer. Smart Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Performance Management in a Global Digitalized Economy presents various viewpoints on topics like artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, digitalisation in various sectors, technology issues like cybersecurity and financial inclusion, and technology-enabled banking issues like money laundering. The theme of sustainability forms the core of the book.

The Future of Entrepreneurship in Africa: Cross Sectoral Perspectives Post COVID-19. 176 pp. 2023:7 (Routledge, UK) <697-352>
ISBN 978-1-03-229848-1 hard ¥29,172.- (税込) GB£ 120.00
ISBN 978-1-03-229847-4 paper ¥10,936.- (税込) GB£ 44.99
Entrepreneurial and Small Business Development in Africa focuses on entrepreneurial development and the development of small businesses in Africa. The central idea of this book is that entrepreneurial development and small business development are connected. Entrepreneurship is lauded as an engine of growth (economic development and job creation), with small businesses often contributing to new job creation. Also, entrepreneurship and small business development are the heart of many countries' economies. The decision to focus on entrepreneurial development and small business development is that first, there is a consensus that most entrepreneurial activities are aimed at creating small new ventures. Second, countries that give special attention to entrepreneurship stand a chance of industrialization. Third, Africa has been reported as having a rich entrepreneurial landscape as the continent's wealthiest individuals generated their wealth as trailblazing entrepreneurs. Fourth, small-scale entrepreneurs and businesses form the backbone of economic activities across the continent. A motivation to focus on entrepreneurial and small business development is the generally accepted view that start-ups in Africa are growing calling for understanding into how to enhance productivity, efficiencies, and application of new technologies. The book aims to enhance the understanding of stakeholders (business owners, governments, practitioners) to overturn challenges such as inadequate start-up capital, competition, lack of employees with the right skills, and low use of technology. The ability to develop entrepreneurship in Africa, and the role of small-medium enterprises cannot be underestimated. The promotion of entrepreneurship in Africa is crucial as it creates jobs, provides decent livelihoods, and contributes to GDP. Most entrepreneurial initiatives in developing economies entail identifying opportunities and new venture creation. It is worth recognizing that most new ventures created take the form of small businesses and the entrepreneurial processes involve entrepreneurs' knowledge and skills, identifying opportunities, involvement in setting up a business and managing the business. The various aspects of this book focus on many entrepreneurial activities that are undertaken on the African continent. This book is focused on African countries since there is a reason to be optimistic about the prospects for growth and entrepreneurship. To achieve entrepreneurial success in African countries, the African Development Bank (2021) proposes that there must be a link between macro and firm-level characteristics that will serve as the mix of entrepreneurship in societies. This book, therefore, considers some macro-level factors such as education, training, and skills development, technological developments, government programs, and entrepreneurial challenges and opportunities. At the firm-level, this book focuses on entrepreneurial initiatives such as branding and marketing.

Creating the Organization of the Future: Building on Drucker and Confucius Foundations. 216 pp. 2023:7 (Emerald, UK) <697-354>
ISBN 978-1-83753-217-9 hard ¥6,619.- (税込) US$ 34.00
Eastern philosophy and Western management ideals offer a powerful set of wisdom on how to build and grow businesses. This can have lasting impact on employees, customers, financial performance, and society. The father of modern management - Peter F. Drucker - focused on how organizations can contribute to a functioning society. Confucius focused on how to build a functioning society, largely from a family and individual perspective. Despite these differing starting points, their collective work provides a remarkably consistent set of principles that can provide practical guidance for executives who want to both "win in the present" and create their own future. The purpose of this book is to help leaders and decision-makers successfully navigate their organizations through the stormy seas of the present, into the future. In the first section of the book, the authors demonstrate how executives can make five direction-setting 'big choices' for their firms. These five big choices are: defining the purpose of an organization, building a mission statement, setting an organization's vision, crafting organizational values, and shaping the firm's culture. In the second section, the authors tie these five choices to the foundational thinking of Drucker and Confucius. Here the concepts, principles, and real-world practice of Eastern and Western leadership are shown here to combine to compelling effect.

Gendered Hierarchies of Dependency: Women Making Partnership in Accountancy Firms. 208 pp. 2023:8 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <697-357>
ISBN 978-0-19-968845-6 hard ¥17,017.- (税込) GB£ 70.00
Accountancy is an elite profession, wielding its influence in every step we take in business and political life, from takeover to bankruptcies and from Brexit to war: we need accountants to help us see the bigger picture and to enable us to trust one another in public life. But for much of the profession's history, women were excluded from it and, while we have seen great advances in women's access to the profession, women remain significantly underrepresented at the top of the hierarchy and amid partnership ranks across the industry and globally. Importantly, there are noteworthy differences in the severity of this underrepresentation across national borders which remain underexplored. Gendered Hierarchies of Dependency considers this underrepresentation of women at partnership level cross-nationally and through a feminist lens, analysing interviews with female partners in Germany and the United Kingdom. In doing so, Kokot-Blamey innovatively merges insights from accountancy and organization studies, political economy, and the feminist ethics of care literature to contribute to contemporary debates about women at work, neoliberalism and the capitalist fiction of the autonomous self. Beyond career advancement to partnership, Kokot-Blamey examines several timely issues such as the persistence of discrimination and sexism at work, motherhood, and weathering recessions and economic crises in accountancy. Revealing important insights into the day-to-day working and private lives of modern elites, this book shows how hierarchies are negotiated differently across borders, but that the outcomes are always gendered.

Social Enterprise in China: State-Third Sector Relations and Institutional Effectiveness. (Routledge Contemporary China Series) 192 pp. 2023:7 (Routledge, UK) <697-371>
ISBN 978-1-03-213958-6 hard ¥31,603.- (税込) GB£ 130.00
Wang offers an empirically-based exploration into Work-Integration Social Enterprises as a means for delivering social services in China. Focussing on the political economy of social enterprise development in China, Wang examines the nature of the relationship between the state and social enterprises and the implications of such relationships for their institutional effectiveness. She adopts a bottom-up approach that investigates indigenous practices embedded within the local political context. A common ground has been established internationally that the social enterprise model provides new ways of social service delivery that could potentially change and restructure the social welfare economy. However, the development path differs across social contexts, especially in an authoritarian country like China. This book will be of great interest both to scholars of China's political economy, and to those with an interest in the development of the social enterprise sector looking to see how this works in a Chinese context.

Disaster Insurance Reimagined: Protection in a Time of Increasing Risk. 176 pp. 2023:6 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <697-223>
ISBN 978-0-19-286516-8 hard ¥8,508.- (税込) GB£ 35.00
This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Academic and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. This book examines the growing role and importance of 'Protection Gap Entities' (PGEs), not-for-profit entities providing insurance protection that would otherwise be unavailable within a purely private sector context. Around the world, PGEs and the insurance instruments they use are becoming increasingly crucial in making sure that funds are available to rebuild after disasters. These PGEs, typically developed as collaborations between governments and the insurance industry, enable insurance to continue at a time when climate change, urbanization, global interdependence, and geo-political instability are making disaster insurance increasingly expensive or unavailable. Given their growing importance, understanding the role of PGEs in both insurance protection and their potential to create a more resilient society is critical. Disaster Insurance Reimagined uses practical examples from different countries to explain how PGEs step in to maintain disaster insurance and how their work can, but does not always, improve financial and physical resilience to disaster. Drawing on 5 years of research into 17 entities that provide insurance cover in 49 countries, the authors examine the strengths, limitations, and evolution of PGEs in providing disaster protection in the face of a growing insurance crisis. They provide an accessible discussion of disaster insurance, its complexities, and the transformation it needs to undergo in order to remain relevant and to contribute to meaningful disaster protection. PGEs and their work offer a path to re-imagining disaster insurance as a key tool in an ecosystem that has societal protection from disaster at its heart.

Reputations At Stake. 192 pp. 2023:3 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <696-267>
ISBN 978-0-19-288652-1 hard ¥7,293.- (税込) GB£ 30.00
Reputation is important to all of us. Reputations at Stake provides evidence-based and engaging examples that reveal a compelling story about the phenomenon of reputation. Organisations cannot ignore reputation because it impacts the sales of its products or services, its share price if publicly listed, and the types of employees it can attract and retain. Reputation is relevant for governments and politicians because it influences public perceptions and voting. It also relates to us at an individual level and impacts on how we can operate and integrate within our home, work, and social lives. Reputation is not merely a macro-level strategic issue (e.g., for governments, corporations, or charities), a meso-level intermediation issue (e.g., for mass media, social media, and PR agencies) or a micro-level operational issue (e.g., for leaders, managers, or employees), but it is a multi-scale phenomenon that impacts everyone. The multiple ways that different and often conflicting reputations are playing out are articulated through research and examples, from the British royal family, libraries during lockdown, the world of influencers, Rio Tinto in Madagascar, white collar inmates in a US Federal Prison, and companies including BP, VW, and McKinsey & Company.

Cloud Governance: Basics and Practice. (Professor of Practice Series) 100 pp. 2022:11 (de Gruyter, GW) <696-268>
ISBN 978-3-11-075526-8 paper ¥5,902.- (税込) EUR 27.95
A fourth Industrial Revolution is underway globally; a digital revolution driven by the rapid, wide-scale deployment of digital technologies, such as in high-speed mobile Internet capabilities, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning. Cloud computing is at the vanguard of this disruption and transformation. As a result, organizations of all sizes, sectors, and geographies have substantially and rapidly increased their adoption and use of cloud computing, including reliance on third party cloud service providers (CSPs). One driver in this proliferation and widespread use of cloud computing is the wide range of unparalleled opportunities provided by the cloud. Such opportunities include streamlining and scaling storage, software, and application support; increasing the speed of data access processing and decision-analytics; more productive customer engagement and empowered employees; reducing costs, such as outsourcing costly and difficult-to-update and -manage in-house IT infrastructure. As a result, organizations of all sizes, geographies, and sectors, are developing their own private cloud or purchasing public cloud services from cloud service providers. While such potential benefits are compelling, cloud computing disrupts corporate governance. Market intelligence reveals critical data, applications and some important roles and responsibilities for policies, security, IT management are increasingly moving from traditional IT departments internal to the organization to the cloud and to the day-to-day management off third party cloud service providers (CSPs). As a result, cloud computing is stressing enterprise governance in a number of ways, including further extending the enterprise’s reliance on third party service providers, exacerbating existing risks, creating new and unexpected operational, cybersecurity and regulatory risks, and fueling an urgent need for more responsive and resilient enterprise risk management strategies and new skills. This disruptive paradigm is raising concerns and thorny questions from corporate boards, trustees, advisors, managers, regulators, and assurance providers about cloud governance, including strategy, performance, risks, controls, and skills. In this context, this book brings to life the diverse range of opportunities and challenges associated with governing the deployment and enterprise-wide use of cloud computing from a practitioner perspective. It will be a practical reference guide with chapter-based self-assessment questions and written in a user-friendly manner that should appeal to diversified cohorts of international students, operational and risk managers, boards, auditors, and advisors.

Navigating Leadership Paradox: Engaging Paradoxical Thinking in Practice. (De Gruyter Transformative Thinking and Practice of Leadership and Its Development) 175 pp. 2023:5 (de Gruyter, GW) <696-269>
ISBN 978-3-11-078885-3 paper ¥6,325.- (税込) EUR 29.95
One of the most significant management challenges in modern companies and organizations is dealing with unavoidable, complex paradoxes. Today’s world is multidimensional, multipolar, and multipurpose, and increasingly, classic management challenges such as leadership vs. management; exploitation vs. exploration, virtual vs. physical presence, economic sustainability vs. environmental sustainability, localization vs. globalization, etc. assume the characteristics of paradoxes rather than problems or dilemmas. Leadership of paradox is not about making a decision once and for all or prioritizing tough trade-offs, but about navigating between opposing considerations. Navigating Leadership Paradox argues that academic knowledge pools can support leaders’ decision-making and sense-making in organizations and navigating paradoxes. The book outlines a practical pathway for management leaders and professionals for steering through paradox using 5 phases, 10 paradoxes, 15 tools, 20 cases, and 25 learning points. It delineates how to identify a paradox by assessing the nature of your challenge and discusses the appropriate courses of action individually as well in collaboration with other stakeholders. It also gives inspiration and advice for professional helpers assisting others in navigating paradox as part of organizational development or other educational purposes. This book will be essential reading for practitioners and academicians in the fields of leadership paradox, complexity management, change management, leadership dilemmas and organizational paradox.

Explaining Management Phenomena: A Philosophical Treatise. 250 pp. 2022:12 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <696-271>
ISBN 978-1-00-932313-0 hard ¥23,094.- (税込) GB£ 95.00
One key objective of management research is to explain business phenomena. Yet understanding the nature of explanation is essentially a topic in philosophy. This is the first book that bridges the gap between a technical, philosophical treatment of the topic and the more practical needs of management scholars, as well as others across the social sciences. It explores how management phenomena can be explained from a philosophical perspective, and renders sophisticated philosophical arguments understandable by readers without specialized training. Covering virtually all the major aspects of the nature of explanation, this work will enhance empirical and theoretical research, as well as approaches combining the two. With many examples from management literature and business news, this study helps scholars in those fields to improve their research outcomes.

Electronic Procurement of Transportation Services: An Evaluation Concept for Electronic Transportation Marketplaces. (Schriftenreihe der HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management) 310 pp. 2023:3 (Springer Gabler, GW) <695-542>
ISBN 978-3-658-40402-4 paper ¥17,949.- (税込) EUR 84.99
This book deals with the electronic procurement of transportation services. It provides an overview of the fundamentals for the procurement of transportation services, including the relevant objectives, involved parties, and processes. A focus is set on Electronic Transportation Marketplaces (ETMs) which offer main functionalities for the procurement of transportation services on the spot and contract market as well as additional functionalities to improve further processes (e.g., time-slot management). Even though such marketplaces are important from an economic and ecological perspective, previous research provides only little knowledge about the status quo of their use, the determinants of marketplace use and the link between this use and business value. To close these research gaps, Philipp Sylla builds a comprehensive conceptual research framework and conducts an empirical analysis based on a web survey of shippers in Germany. The empirical results build the foundation for the development of an evaluation concept that provides practical support for shippers in the assessment of marketplace use and the evaluation of potential business value impacts.

Capitalizing Your Technology to Disrupt and Dominate Your Markets: Transforming Cost Centers to Innovation Centers. 192 pp. 2023:6 (Routledge, UK) <695-648>
ISBN 978-1-03-241517-8 hard ¥21,879.- (税込) GB£ 90.00
ISBN 978-1-03-241516-1 paper ¥6,317.- (税込) GB£ 25.99
Every business today has some technology as part of its strategy. Inevitably, it is becoming harder for many CEOs to effectively lead their R&D efforts at the same time that their investment in tech keeps growing. Even startup founders can find themselves flustered when trying to understand whether a particular issue is genuinely impossible, getting the team to provide reliable estimates, and having their top tech leaders speak in plain words as opposed to jargon. This book helps them bridge the culture gap between the C-suite and R&D, cover frequent tech-related decisions and issues, and provide a way to unlock tech as an offensive weapon and a strategic differentiator. To create an environment where technology is not merely an execution mechanism but acts as a fulcrum for strategic opportunities, one must put a particular leadership team in place and equip them with digital literacy. Based on the author's experience and discussions with hundreds of executives worldwide, he short-circuits common failure patterns and enables non-technical senior leaders to act with more certainty and clarity regarding their tech efforts. Startups and tech efforts initiated without enough understanding of the technical aspects often have to be scrapped and started from scratch within 18 months. This can make-or-break certain endeavors, and as the author has helped his clients avoid these problems, the book will help the readers establish a sturdy foundation to work from. The book covers clear guidelines for founders, executives, and senior leaders that are not tech-savvy. These include establishing a tech organization, making the first key hires, assessing the relevance and risk involved in different options, and creating a healthy connection as opposed to a tech silo. On top of that, it will include lessons and case studies that stem from my experience in the "Startup Nation," such as how to inject chutzpah into daily discussions and create an organization with habitual innovation.

ISBN 978-981-19-9478-4 hard ¥17,949.- (税込) EUR 84.99
This book focuses on research methodologies that apply to business research, particularly for researchers and managers embarking thereon to support managerial decision-making in the industry. In doing so, the book's objective is to guide business researchers in identifying, defining, and applying rigorous academic methodologies that will enable them to formulate, design, and execute effective research that answers their specific management problems. Such guidance can empower organizational managers to understand that business research can contribute to practical solutions to actual problems experienced in the industry. In addition, by emphasizing the integrative nature between (1) academic research and (2) experienced industry problems, it becomes possible to foster an awareness of such research's potential impact on organizational performance management, sustainability, and resilience. With that, attention is given to narrowing the gap between theory and practice, which requires that fundamentals of scientific research be adhered to while maintaining the delicate balance between a practice-friendly guide to pragmatically sound and academically rigorous business research.

First, the book focuses on the functioning of blockchain systems, introducing basic concepts such as transactions, consensus mechanisms and smart contracts, as well as giving a smooth introduction to the basic features of cryptography that underpin blockchain technology, e.g., digital signatures and hashing. Then, the book focuses on specific blockchain platforms (Bitcoin, Ethereum, private blockchain platforms) currently used for the implementation of cryptocurrencies and other blockchain systems. Finally, it introduces a set of tools to understand and analyse the suitability of blockchain technology in different business scenarios from the software architecture, business model, and business operation perspectives. Examples and case studies of blockchain applications currently in production are discussed extensively across the book. This book targets students and educators with an interest in blockchain technology providing a one-stop shop to obtain a deep and complete insight in blockchain technology and its applicability in different business scenarios. The textbook is designed primarily for 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students in industrial engineering, business and management, and information systems. However, it can be adopted also in the computer science majors, since it does not strictly require any specific pre-requisite knowledge. At the graduate level, this book can be used in courses for industrial engineering, information systems and management students. Finally, the book is also of interest to practitioners, like business analysts, process analysts and information system architects, to understand the enabling and transformative potential of blockchain in a given business scenario.

Digital Entertainment as Next Evolution in Service Sector: Emerging Digital Solutions in Reshaping Different Industries. 255 pp. 2023:3 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <695-653>
ISBN 978-981-19-8120-3 hard ¥31,677.- (税込) EUR 149.99
The book showcases research on digital entertainment solutions in different sectors. In recent years, digital media have evolved to include bandwidth-rich, smart, and connected platforms accessed via computers, tablets, smart phones, social media, and video game consoles. The high connectivity and vast processing capacity of these platforms have allowed for platform-agnostic, streaming, always-on, entertainment-on-demand consumption of digital content in a way distinct from traditional models of entertainment consumption. Moving beyond the unilateral delivery of content, with fixed positions of the entertainers and the entertained, digital entertainment is now dynamically generated by users and providers, blurring the boundary between producers and consumers of entertainment. With the increasing accessibility of multimodal media that surround audiences with sensory-rich information, digital entertainment is becoming more immersive.

With AI, cryptocurrency, and more in the news, it seems that being an entrepreneur means being in IT, but humanities graduates are launching new businesses every day, turning a profit and having social impact. This book explores how a humanities background can enable entrepreneurs to thrive. Across all levels of education, students are given the message that to change the world - or make money - the arts and humanities are not the subjects to study. At the same time, discussions of innovation and entrepreneurship highlight the importance of essential skills, such as critical thinking, storytelling, cultural awareness, and ethical decision-making. Here's the disconnect: the subjects that help to develop these vital skills are derided at critical points in any aspiring entrepreneur's education. This collection of perspectives from entrepreneurs in a range of fields and humanities educators illustrates what individuals, and the wider world, are missing when humanities are overlooked as a source of inspiration and success in business. Featuring a foreword by Sensemaking author Christian Madsbjerg, this is a thought-provoking guide for aspiring entrepreneurs in all sectors, and for educators, a window on the practical value of the humanities in an ever more mechanized world._
