Eiling, Lisa, Primat der Praxis: Bernhard Harms und das Institut fuer Weltwirtschaft 1913-1933. (Studien zur Geschichte und Theorie des Kapitalismus 3) 390 S. 2023:4 (Mohr, GW) <697-184>
ISBN 978-3-16-162108-6 hard ¥12,672.- (税込) EUR 60.00

Kovacs, Janos Matyas (ed.), Communist Planning versus Rationality: Mathematical Economics and the Central Plan in Eastern Europe and China. (Revisiting Communism: Collectivist Economic and Political Thought in Historical Perspective) 424 pp. 2022:5 (Lexington Books, US) <695-273>
ISBN 978-1-79363-177-0 hard ¥24,337.- (税込) US$ 125.00

This volume examines concepts of central planning, a cornerstone of political economy in Soviet-type societies. It revolves around the theory of "optimal planning" which promised a profound modernization of Stalinist-style verbal planning. Encouraged by cybernetic dreams in the 1950s and supporting the strategic goals of communist leaders in the Cold War, optimal planners offered the ruling elites a panacea for the recurrent crises of the planned economy. Simultaneously, their planning projects conveyed the pride of rational management and scientific superiority over the West. The authors trace the rise and fall of the research program in the communist era in eight countries of Eastern Europe, including the Soviet Union, and China, describing why the mission of optimization was doomed to fail and why the failure was nevertheless very slow. The theorists of optimal planning contributed to the rehabilitation of mathematical culture in economic research in the communist countries, and thus, to a neoclassical turn in economics all over the ex-communist world). However, because they have not rejected optimal planning as "computopia," there is a large space left behind for future generations to experiment with Big Optimal Plans anew-based, at this time, on artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Rosefielde, Steven, Socialist Economic Systems: 21st Century Pathways. (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy) 320 pp. 2023:6 (Routledge, UK) <695-274>
ISBN 978-1-03-244316-4 hard ¥31,603.- (税込) GB£ 130.00

Bernie Sanders' socialist advocacy in the United States, communist China's economic successes and a Marxist revival are inspiring many to muse about improved strategies for building superior socialist futures. Socialist Economic Systems provides an objective record of socialism's promises and performance 1820-2022, identifies a feasible path forward and provides a rigorous analytic framework for the comparison of economic systems. The book opens by surveying pre-industrial utopias from Plato to Thomas More, and libertarian communal designs for superior living. It plumbs all aspects of the revolutionary and democratic socialist political movements that emerged after 1870 and considers the comparative economic, political and social performance of the USSR and others from the Bolshevik Revolution onwards. The book also provides case studies for all revolutionary Marxist-Leninist regimes, and supplementary discussions of Mondragon cooperatives, Israeli kibbutzim, Nordic corporatism, and European democratic socialism. It investigates the theoretical and practical complexities of command-planning, reform communism, market communism, worker economic management and egalitarianism. It examines communism as an engine of economic growth, and a mechanism for improving people's quality of existence, including living standards, labor self-governance, egalitarianism, social justice, and prevention of crimes against humanity before addressing the perennial question of what needs to be done next. A suggested path forward is elaborated drawing lessons from the warts-and-all historical performance of socialist economies 1917-2022 and failed socialist prophesy. The evidence indicates that the key to 21st century socialism success lies in empowering workers of all descriptions to govern democratically for their mutual protection and welfare without the extraneous imposition of priorities imposed by other movements. The book is essential reading for anyone interested in Socialism, political economy, comparative economic systems and political and social history.

Mbeki, Nobantu, Post-Keynesian Theories of the Firm: Kalecki and Radical Uncertainty. (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy) 472 pp. 2023:5 (Routledge, UK) <694-154>
ISBN 978-0-367-42104-5 hard ¥29,172.- (税込) GB£ 120.00

Within Post-Keynesian economics there is a spectrum of approaches to theories of the firm but what they have in common, to their great benefit, is a proper integration of the concept of radical uncertainty: data that cannot be known. This book revisits Kalecki's theory of the firm is located to show that it constitutes fertile theoretical ground on which to systematically understand the resultant indeterminacy when firms operate under conditions of radical uncertainty. The author proposes a way of generalising radical uncertainty by integrating some of the separate approaches within Post-Keynesian economics centred around Kalecki's work. Through this, it is shown that radical uncertainty does more than just change the ultimate motivation of firms (dropping short run profit maximisation; more complex motivation; interconnectivity with the environment), it is central to the emergence, existence and motivation of firms, and critically also firm strategy. It is argued that firms do not simply respond to uncertainty: it is the systematic cause of their intentional behaviour. Through developing these arguments, the book also contributes to the methodology of Kalecki and Shackle, as well as Kaleckian price theory. This book will be important reading for anyone interested in theories of the firm, Post-Keynesian economics and heterodox approaches to economics more broadly.

Bollard, Alan, Economists in the Cold War: How a Handful of Economists Fought the Battle of Ideas. 352 pp. 2023:6 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <693-199>
ISBN 978-0-19-288739-9 hard ¥6,077.- (税込) GB£ 25.00

Economists in the Cold War is an account of the economic drivers and outcomes of the Cold War, told through the stories of seven international economists, who were all closely involved in theory and policy in the period 1945-73. For them, the Cold War was a battle of economic ideas, a fight between central planning and market allocation, exploring economic thinking derived from the battle between Marxist and Capitalist ideologies, a fundamental difference but with many intricacies. The book recounts how economic theory advanced, how new economic tools were developed, and how policies were tested. Each chapter is based on the involvement of one of the selected economists. It was a challenging but dangerous time in economics: a time of economic recovery post-war, with industrial rebuilding, economic growth, and rising incomes. But it was also a time of ideological warfare, nuclear rivalry, military expansion, and personal conflict. The narrative is approximately chronological, ranging from the Potsdam Conference in Germany to the Pinochet Coup in Chile. The selected economists include an American, a Pole, a Hungarian, a German, a British, a Japanese, and an Argentinian, all very different economists, but with interconnections among them. Each chapter also features a dissenting economist who held a contrasting view, and recounts the subsequent economic arguments that played out.

Dueppe, Till, The Closed World of East German Economists: Hopes and Defeats of a Generation. (Historical Perspectives on Modern Economics) 300 pp. 2023:4 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <693-201>
ISBN 978-1-00-923309-5 hard ¥23,094.- (税込) GB£ 95.00

History is replete with examples of scientists and social scientists working under the yoke of oppressive regimes. In The Closed World of East German Economists, Till Dueppe tells the story of a generation of economists whose entire careers coincided with the forty-one-year existence of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). In a micro-historical fashion, he examines the world of East German economists through the formative episodes in the lives of five different economists from this "hope" generation. Using both the perspective of the actors as expressed in interviews and archival material unknown to the actors, the book follows East German economics from the early days of the acceptance of Marxism-Leninism through to its interaction with Western economics and its eventual dissolution following the collapse of the Berlin Wall. It is fascinating insight into the challenges faced by economists in a unique period of European history.

Herscovici, Alain, Value, Historicity, and Economic Epistemology: An Archaeology of Economic Science. 228 pp. 2023:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <693-202>
ISBN 978-3-031-21156-0 hard ¥27,453.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book aims to study, from an approach linked to epistemology and the history of ideas, the evolution of economic science and its differing seminal systems. Today mainstream economics solves certain problems chosen within the scope of "normal science," without questioning the epistemological foundations that support the paradigm within which they were conceived. Contrary to a Neoclassical interpretation, the historicist interpretation shows that, from the incommensurability of the different paradigms, it is impossible to conceive of a progress of economic science, in a long-term perspective. This book ultimately reveals, from the different economic schools of thought analyzed, that there is no pure form of episteme, or system of understanding. Each concrete episteme in the history of economic thought is by nature hybrid in the sense that it contains components from preceding systems of knowledge.

Kozik, Walther, Die Herausbildung des Institutionalismus: Ueber die Grundlegungen bei Thorstein Bunde Veblen, John Roger Commons und Wesley Clair Mitchell. 320 S. 2022:11 (Metropolis, GW) <693-203>
ISBN 978-3-7316-1522-4 paper ¥8,025.- (税込) EUR 38.00

Pabst, Adrian / Scazzieri, Roberto, The Constitution of Political Economy: Polity, Society and the Commonweal. 250 pp. 2023:4 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <693-205>
ISBN 978-1-108-83109-3 hard ¥23,094.- (税込) GB£ 95.00

The two dominant conceptions of political economy are based on either reducing political decisions to rational-choice reasoning or, conversely, reducing economic structures and phenomena to the realm of politics. In this book, Adrian Pabst and Roberto Scazzieri contend that neither conception is convincing and argue for a fundamental rethinking of political economy. Developing a new approach at the interface of economic theory and political thought, the book shows that political economy covers a plurality of dimensions, which reflect internal hierarchies and multiple relationships within the economic and political sphere. The Constitution of Political Economy presents a new, richer conception of political economy that draws on a range of thinkers from the history of political economy, recognising the complex embedding of the economy and the polity in society. Effective policy-making has to reflect this embedding and rests on the interdependence between local, national, and international actors to address multiple systemic crises.

Quaas, Friedrun, John Law (1671-1729): Pionier der Geldpolitik. 400 S. 2022:12 (Metropolis, GW) <693-206>
ISBN 978-3-7316-1529-3 paper ¥8,025.- (税込) EUR 38.00

Uemura, Hiroyasu, Japanese Institutionalist Post-Keynesians Revisited: Inheritance from Marx, Keynes and Institutionalism. (Evolutionary Economics and Social Complexity Science 29) 132 pp. 2023:2 (Springer, GW) <693-208>
ISBN 978-981-19-8687-1 hard ¥23,229.- (税込) EUR 109.99 *

This is the first book that systematically considers the academic achievements of Japanese institutionalist post-Keynesian economists in the postwar period and argues that we can learn much from their intellectual heritage. Those Japanese economists include the world-renowned figures, Shigeto Tsuru and Hirofumi Uzawa, whose inheritance came from Keynes, Marx, and institutionalism. In the era of globalization after the 1990s, economic inequality and social divide have intensified all over the world. In this situation, the academic achievements of those economists in postwar Japan should be reconsidered for the aim of establishing a new political economy. With this perspective, the book looks at what we can learn from Japanese institutionalist post-Keynesian economists In particular, the essence of research work that each of them developed is identified, focusing on the total image of the economy for contemporary capitalism. Those economists benefited from the diverse legacies of Keynes, Marx, Kalecki and institutionalist economists such as Veblen and Galbraith. When their research is examined systematically, Japanese institutionalist post-Keynesians are commonly characterized as those who developed their institutional analysis of contemporary capitalism with in-depth theoretical and empirical studies, with the aim of establishing their own political economy as the moral science of civil society. These important features provide us with insightful implications for institutional economics in the 21st century.

ISBN 978-3-95743-280-3 paper ¥16,684.- (税込) EUR 79.00

England, Christopher William, Land and Liberty: Henry George and the Crafting of Modern Liberalism. (Hagley Library Studies in Business, Technology, and Politics) 360 pp. 2023:4 (Johns Hopkins U. Pr., US) <692-126>
ISBN 978-1-4214-4540-3 hard ¥10,708.- (税込) US$ 55.00 *

A comprehensive history of Henry George and the single tax movement. In 1912, Sun Yat-sen announced the birth of the Chinese Republic and promised that it would be devoted to the economic welfare of all its people. In shaping his plans for wealth redistribution, he looked to an American now largely forgotten in the United States: Henry George. In Land and Liberty, Christopher William England excavates the lost history of one of America's most influential radicals and explains why so many activists were once inspired by his proposal to tax landed wealth. Drawing on the private papers of a network of devoted believers, Land and Liberty represents the first comprehensive account of this important movement to nationalize land and expropriate rent. Beginning with concerns about rising rents in the 1870s and ending with the establishment of New Deal policies that extended public control over land, natural resources, and housing, "Georgism" served as a catalyst for reforms intended to make the nation more democratic. Many of these concerns remain relevant today, including the exploitation of natural resources, rising urban rent, and wealth inequality. At a time when class divisions sparked fears that capitalism and democracy were incompatible, hopes of building a social welfare state using the rents of idle landlords revitalized the middle class's conviction that democracy and liberty could be reconciled. Against steep odds, George made land nationalization vital to the politics of a nation dominated by small farmers and helped push liberalism leftward through his calls for collective rights to land and natural resources.

Mattei, Clara E., The Capital Order: How Economists Invented Austerity and Paved the Way to Fascism. 480 pp. 2022:11 (U. Chicago Pr., US) <692-127>
ISBN 978-0-226-81839-9 hard ¥5,841.- (税込) US$ 30.00 *

A Financial Times Best Book of the Year "A must-read, with key lessons for the future."-Thomas Piketty A groundbreaking examination of austerity's dark intellectual origins. For more than a century, governments facing financial crisis have resorted to the economic policies of austerity-cuts to wages, fiscal spending, and public benefits-as a path to solvency. While these policies have been successful in appeasing creditors, they've had devastating effects on social and economic welfare in countries all over the world. Today, as austerity remains a favored policy among troubled states, an important question remains: What if solvency was never really the goal? In The Capital Order, political economist Clara E. Mattei explores the intellectual origins of austerity to uncover its originating motives: the protection of capital-and indeed capitalism-in times of social upheaval from below. Mattei traces modern austerity to its origins in interwar Britain and Italy, revealing how the threat of working-class power in the years after World War I animated a set of top-down economic policies that elevated owners, smothered workers, and imposed a rigid economic hierarchy across their societies. Where these policies "succeeded," relatively speaking, was in their enrichment of certain parties, including employers and foreign-trade interests, who accumulated power and capital at the expense of labor. Here, Mattei argues, is where the true value of austerity can be observed: its insulation of entrenched privilege and its elimination of all alternatives to capitalism. Drawing on newly uncovered archival material from Britain and Italy, much of it translated for the first time, The Capital Order offers a damning and essential new account of the rise of austerity-and of modern economics-at the levers of contemporary political power.

Tavlas, George S., The Monetarists: The Making of the Chicago Monetary Tradition, 1927-1960. 480 pp. 2023:2 (U. Chicago Pr., US) <692-128>
ISBN 978-0-226-82318-8 hard ¥9,735.- (税込) US$ 50.00

An essential origin story of modern society's most influential economic doctrine. The Chicago School of economic thought has been subject to endless generalizations-and mischaracterizations-in contemporary debate. What is often portrayed as a monolithic obsession with markets is, in fact, a nuanced set of economic theories born from decades of research and debate. The Monetarists is a deeply researched history of the monetary policies-and personalities-that codified the Chicago School of monetary thought from the 1930s through the 1960s. These policies can be characterized broadly as monetarism: the belief that prices and interest rates can be kept stable by controlling the amount of money in circulation. As economist George S. Tavlas makes clear, these ideas were more than just the legacy of Milton Friedman; they were a tradition in theory brought forth by a crucible of minds and debates throughout campus. Through unprecedented mining of archival material, The Monetarists offers the first complete history of one of the twentieth century's most formative intellectual periods and places. It promises to elevate our understanding of this doctrine and its origins for generations to come.

≫Economics Revisited. On the Immanent Inaccuracy of Economics. To Adolph Wagner (1835-1917)≪: Up to now economic theory is presented as mathematical economics with the scent of a precise and homogenous theory. But in the end we have fuzziness ? in variables, data and supposed functional relations. Differences between the existing economies as well as rapid changes by all kinds of innovations and demografic impulses would perhaps require fuzzy mathematics, nearly without any possibilities of prediction. The reasons are outlined in the book in hand.

Burgio, Alberto (ed.), Adam Smith and Modernity: 1723-2023. (Routledge Studies in Eighteenth-Century Philosophy) 376 pp. 2023:3 (Routledge, UK) <691-21>
ISBN 978-1-03-229394-3 hard ¥29,172.- (税込) GB£ 120.00

This volume features 19 original essays on Adam Smith's conception of modernity. The contributions demonstrate the relevance of Smith as the great interpreter of modernity 250 years after the publication of The Wealth of Nations. The chapters in Part 1 focus on structural aspects of Smith's work. They cover topics such as Smith as theorist of spontaneous order, the systematic dimension of Smith's theoretical construction, and Smith's role as a historian of economic thought. Part 2 addresses Smith's conception of modern subjectivity between Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles-Lettres, Theory of Moral Sentiments and Wealth of Nations. Here the contributors consider the figure of the Smithian "merchant" and the importance of ridicule and satire for understanding modern civility, and comment on the role of sympathy, imagination and moral judgement in developing a sense of self, the condition of the modern man in society, and the virtue of self-command. Part 3 focuses on the crucial question of the relationship between ethics and economics discussing the link between efficiency, equity and justice, the nature of Smith's theory of value, and the ethical connotation of Smith's critique. Part 4 deals with topics inherent to the functional dynamics and development process of the Smithian "commercial society". These topics include law and authority, the relationship between work and freedom, the parable of the "poor man's son", and the economic and political consequences of the new secular orthodoxy. Finally, the chapters in Part 5 explore themes related to history and the Smithian idea of progress. They focus on the link between trade and progress of civilization, Smith's modern sociological vision of mass commercial societies, Smith's judgment on "savage" and premodern societies, and the controversial question of the immanentistic or providentialist perspective from which Smith considers both the social dynamics and the historical process. Adam Smith and Modernity will appeal to scholars and advanced students on 18th-century philosophy, the history of economic thought, and the history of social and political philosophy.

ISBN 978-1-03-241708-0 hard ¥34,034.- (税込) GB£ 140.00

Adam Smith's contribution to economics is well recognised, yet scholars have recently been exploring anew the multidisciplinary nature of his works. The Adam Smith Review is a rigorously refereed annual review that provides a unique forum for interdisciplinary debate on all aspects of Adam Smith's works, his place in history, and the significance of his writings to the modern world. It is aimed at facilitating debate among scholars working across the humanities and social sciences, thus emulating the reach of the Enlightenment world which Smith helped to shape. This thirteenth volume demonstrates, perhaps more so than any other issue in recent memory, the dazzling breadth and diversity of Smith scholarship across the disciplines today - from studies of hospitals, balls and monsters to colonies, clerisy, language and the mind; from issues of empathy, compassion, cohesion, translation, representation, paternalism and moral innovation, to Smith's influence on Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese, American and Italian thought and practice. Adam Smith remains our companion, always provoking us, and stimulating creative directions in our thinking and research.

Widely recognized as one of the greatest economists in history, there has been a surge of interest in the work of John Maynard Keynes since the financial crisis of 2008 with people looking for solutions to rebalance the economy. Presciently, Keynes argued that free markets are unable to fully organize economic activity and that the steadying and reforming hand of the State is needed for capitalism to function properly. In the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008, and exacerbated by a global pandemic, these ideas are more timely than ever. This book provides an introduction to Keynes' thought on capitalism, the State and macroeconomics. It starts with Keynes' epistemological theory of his A Treatise on Probability (1921), from which aspects such as uncertainty and the decision-making process, both later important in his economic work, can be drawn. The book then pursues Keynes' economic writings. From A Tract on the Monetary Reform (1923) and A Treatise on Money (1930) it shows Keynes' pursuit of a full understanding of the role of money in the economy. Keynes masterfully demonstrated the knowledge he gained through his 1936 masterpiece The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money. Going beyond Keynes' classic, this books also explores his later work on economic policy prescriptions and finally his concept of State and economic development. This accessible introduction to the economic thought of Keynes will be essential reading for those interested in the history and development of economics, as well as political scientists, sociologists, historians and others seeking an overview of these foundational economic ideas.

Jonsson, Fredrik Albritton / Wennerlind, Carl, Scarcity: A History from the Origins of Capitalism to the Climate Crisis. 304 pp. 2023:4 (Harvard U. Pr., US) <690-206>
ISBN 978-0-674-98708-1 hard ¥6,814.- (税込) US$ 35.00

A sweeping intellectual history of the concept of economic scarcity-its development across five hundred years of European thought and its decisive role in fostering the climate crisis.Modern economics presumes a particular view of scarcity, in which human beings are innately possessed of infinite desires and society must therefore facilitate endless growth and consumption irrespective of nature's limits. Yet as Fredrik Albritton Jonsson and Carl Wennerlind show, this vision of scarcity is historically novel and was not inevitable even in the age of capitalism. Rather, it reflects the costly triumph of infinite-growth ideologies across centuries of European economic thought-at the expense of traditions that sought to live within nature's constraints. The dominant conception of scarcity today holds that, rather than master our desires, humans must master nature to meet those desires. Albritton Jonsson and Wennerlind argue that this idea was developed by thinkers such as Francis Bacon, Samuel Hartlib, Alfred Marshall, and Paul Samuelson, who laid the groundwork for today's hegemonic politics of growth. Yet proponents of infinite growth have long faced resistance from agrarian radicals, romantic poets, revolutionary socialists, ecofeminists, and others. These critics-including the likes of Gerrard Winstanley, Dorothy Wordsworth, Karl Marx, and Hannah Arendt-embraced conceptions of scarcity in which our desires, rather than nature, must be mastered to achieve the social good. In so doing, they dramatically reenvisioned how humans might interact with both nature and the economy.Following these conflicts into the twenty-first century, Albritton Jonsson and Wennerlind insist that we need new, sustainable models of economic thinking to address the climate crisis. Scarcity is not only a critique of infinite growth, but also a timely invitation to imagine alternative ways of flourishing on Earth.

What was the role of money in completing this task? Can macro fluctuations be explained by a collection and inspection of data, or can these data only be properly read by a dominant theory, chosen for analytical reasons?

Butos, William N. / McQuade, Thomas J., Hayekian Systems: Research into the Structure of Social Interaction. (Routledge Foundations of the Market Economy) 248 pp. 2023:3 (Routledge, UK) <689-75>
ISBN 978-1-03-237273-0 hard ¥29,172.- (税込) GB£ 120.00 *

The central theme in the work of F.A. Hayek was the problem of order in society, and his focus was epistemological: he was concerned with the constraints on knowledge, the problems associated with its distribution, the structures in which it inheres, and the implications of these issues for the understanding of social phenomena generally. But while his work has greatly improved our understanding of market processes, application to more complex social arrangements was not an unambiguous success. In seeking to progress beyond Hayek's difficulties in formulating a more general theory of spontaneous order, this book fleshes out an analogy between social orders and the biological order detailed in Hayek's The Sensory Order into a theory of adaptive systems. It focuses first on those aspects of the systems which enable them to learn about their environments, and then on the entrepreneurial processes which implement their anticipatory capabilities. The inclusion of anticipatory elements, inspired by the work of Robert Rosen, results in a theory of social orders which integrates many of the disparate findings of Austrian economists into a self-consistent conceptual framework and has applicability to other social arrangements such as firms and governments. Of particular interest is the interaction between the systems of science and government, an issue of significant current concern which is comprehensively explored here both theoretically and empirically. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in Hayek, Austrian economics, social theory, and the history of economic thought more broadly.

ISBN 978-1-03-213196-2 hard ¥29,172.- (税込) GB£ 120.00

This book discusses key issues in economic policy in the context of the history of economic thought. Most of the current and past academic controversies in economics are, explicitly or implicitly, centered around the application and form of economic policy. This is particularly evident in the post-WWII period, with the appearance of economic policy as a distinguishable subfield, but important elements of various economic policy issues can be found throughout the history of economic thought. This book discusses various topics in economic policy - such as questions over state spending and taxation, income redistribution, and the role of money - with each chapter focusing on a particular period or major school of economic thought ranging from the 'prehistory' of economics up to the present day. Specific chapters of the volume cover the main schools of economic thought from different national and theoretical traditions, incorporating mercantilism, the Physiocratic School, the German Historical school, Marxism, the Austrian School, institutional economics, Keynesian economics, behavioral economics and more. This book will be of great interest to readers of the history of economic policy as well as history of economic thought, macroeconomics and economic history more broadly.

Evgeny A. Preobrazhensky was Russia's foremost economist in the 1920s. This volume editorially reconstructs his theory of socialist industrialisation in an agrarian country and relates it to previous socialist theories and to issues of political struggle, culture and communist morality. The editors create a unique portrait of Preobrazhensky as an economist and social theorist, assess the viability of NEP as a model of economic growth, and identify the fault lines that contributed to the split in the Trotskyist Opposition and its defeat in the struggle against Stalin. The bulk of the work consists of the important An Attempt to Provide a Theoretical Analysis of the Soviet Economy, while the material in Volume III focuses on concrete analysis.

This interdisciplinary volume explores the relationship between history and a range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences: economics, political science, political theory, international relations, sociology, philosophy, law, literature and anthropology. The relevance of historical approaches within these disciplines has shifted over the centuries. Many of them, like law and economics, originally depended on self-consciously historical procedures. These included the marshalling of evidence from past experience, philological techniques and source criticism. Between the late nineteenth and the middle of the twentieth century, the influence of new methods of research, many indebted to models favoured by the natural sciences, such as statistical, analytical or empirical approaches, secured an expanding intellectual authority while the hegemony of historical methods declined in relative terms. In the aftermath of this change, the essays collected in History in the Humanities and Social Sciences reflect from a variety of angles on the relevance of historical concerns to representative disciplines as they are configured today.

Biebricher, Thomas / Bonefeld, W. / Nedergaard, P. (eds.), The Oxford Handbook of Ordoliberalism. (Oxford Handbooks) 592 pp. 2022:9 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <686-210>
ISBN 978-0-19-886120-1 hard ¥29,172.- (税込) GB£ 120.00 *

Since the financial crisis of 2008, ordoliberalism emerged from relative obscurity to become one of the crucial terms of analysis across a wide range of academic literatures and public discussion. In fact, it became the main reference for a number of issues, including assessments of the attempted resolution of the Eurozone crisis, arguments about German hegemony in Europe, debates over the future of economic liberalism and controversies about authoritarian liberalism. What is striking about ordoliberalism is its pronounced ambiguity, as some view it as a more refined and potentially progressive variant of neoliberalism, while others cast it as a blueprint for a regime of austerity reigning over a society of competition with only rudimentary democratic institutions. And while ordoliberalism is often portrayed as a quintessentially German tradition, its impact has not been confined to the German context, extending all the way to the unlikely case of China. In short, ordoliberalism is a phenomenon of arguably considerable influence that remains poorly understood, as it is mystified by its proponents and vilified by its critics. The Oxford Handbook of Ordoliberalism contains a selection of chapters written by an international cast of experts on ordoliberalism that aim to elucidate and analyze the latter in all of its many facets. From the intellectual origins and prime exemplars to its main theoretical themes and practical applications up to the most recent debates taking place across a range of disciplines, this volume offers the first comprehensive account of ordoliberalism for the English-speaking world.
